Breast augmentation is a procedure used to enlarge breasts, change their shape, or improve symmetry1,2,3. Techniques include the use of saline or silicone implants, or the transfer of the patient's own fat1,2.

What it is

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast size, change their shape, or improve symmetry1,2,3. It may also be used to correct a congenital deformity3. The procedure involves placing implants behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle1,3. Alternatively, it can be performed using the patient's own fat, a process known as lipofilling2.

Techniques
  • Implants: These are sacs filled with either sterile salt water (saline) or cohesive silicone gel1,2,3. Implants can be placed between the breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind the chest muscle1,3.
  • Fat Transfer (Lipofilling): Fat is harvested from areas such as the thighs, hips, or abdomen using liposuction, purified, and then injected into the breasts2.
  • Incision Sites: Implants may be inserted through incisions made in the skin next to or below the breast (inframammary), around the edge of the areola (circumareolar), under the arm (axilla), or near the belly button1,2,3.
How long it takes

The operation typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes1, or around 1 to 2 hours2.

Recovery and time off

According to the NHS, patients may go home the same day or stay in the hospital overnight1. The NHS states that it can take a few weeks to fully recover, and patients should take one to two weeks off work1. According to the NHS, patients should not drive for at least one week1 and should be able to return to most normal activities after six weeks1.

ISAPS states that patients usually rest for 48 to 72 hours2. According to ISAPS, some patients return to normal activities within 5 to 7 days2, and driving should be avoided for at least the first 10 to 15 days2.

According to the NHS, it is recommended that patients do not fly for 5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery4.

What the price usually includes

In Metio's data, a «package» price includes more than the operation itself, such as a hotel or transfers. A «procedure» price is the operation alone. The two are never mixed in one figure.
